  • Nordic Walking

We will be walking with unique Nordic poles on our beautiful local trails. This creative walking technique originated in Norway and is now very popular across Europe. It boosts your cardio, plus the benefit of providing a full-body strength workout using 85 to 90% of the muscles you activate. The special poles are adjustable, shorter than ski or trekking poles, and secured with hand straps that allow you to propel forward. The poles and hand straps are helpful for stability and preventing falls. So anyone can do this! The unique walking technique requires a small learning curve that I will spend the time teaching to everyone. The instructor will hold a training class at the beginning of each session. Below are the trails for each week where we will meet. April 9: J. Harry Rich Trail April 23: The Throne April 30: Groton Town Forest - Dead River Rd, Ames Pond Rd May 7: Fitch's Bridge Ice Line Trail May 14: Sawtell Conservation area May 21: Indian Rock Trail ** CLASS REQUIREMENT: It is required that you purchase a set of Nordic Walking poles. I suggest poles that are adjustable for height as this is key for optimal setup. Some adjust in three parts and I don't recommend them. Just a simple adjustment in the middle is good. I bought mine on Amazon and did NOT spend top dollar on them! The brand I have is FIZAN, but any that you can find that suit your budget is fine. Our first class will require you to have them in hand so we can get adjusted and learn how to use them before a trail trip. **

  • Gentle Yoga & Guided Relaxation

Guided relaxation (also known as Yoga Nidra) is a systematic method of guided relaxation that has a profound effect on the body, mind and emotions. During the practice, you are guided through various stages of deeper relaxation, allowing the mind to become more relaxed and more receptive. The practice can help release physical tension, reduce mental and emotional stress, increase creativity, aid in memory retention, help us to have a better night sleep, and have better overall wellbeing. Class starts with 20-25 minutes of gentle yoga to allow your body to prepare for the relaxation and loosen stiff muscles from sitting at a desk all day. Then you will lay down on your mat and be guided through the systematic guided relaxation. All you have to do is listen to the guided meditation and find yourself relaxing and maybe even falling asleep. Guided relaxation is a wonderful practice that anyone can do. It leaves the student feeling rested, relaxed, less stressed and many students have reported having a great nights sleep after practicing this yoga technique. Students should have a blanket, pillows/bolsters and blocks to assist them in their yoga. Class takes place over Zoom. The link will be sent in the registration confirmation email.
  • Yin Yoga and Chill

Yin yoga is a slow-paced, passive type of yoga that incorporates long holds and deep breaths for a stretch that gets into the muscle fibers. Designed to prepare the body for comfort in seated meditation, Yin yoga is the perfect complement to more vigorous Yang-based practices like Vinyasa, Ashtanga, and Power Yoga. Yin yoga involves a series of seated and supine postures, typically held for 3-5 minutes at a time. During these prolonged periods of stillness, the yogi experiences a surrendering sensory awakening that melts away residual tension and stress. Long Yin yoga holds are also known to release repressed or stored emotions, leaving the yogi feeling lighter, clearer and completely relaxed. Yin yoga is an excellent practice for beginners. It gives them plenty of time to uncover the unique benefits of individual poses without worrying about tricky transitions. It’s also a tried and true technique for yogis of all levels to experience full body release. Those recovering from an injury or looking to lengthen versus strengthen will feel right at home in a Yin yoga class. Restorative yoga is suitable for practitioners of all levels. By definition, restorative yoga is a restful practice that holds yoga poses (asanas) for a longer duration using props like yoga blocks, blankets, and bolsters. It is a practice of deep relaxation that emphasizes the meditative aspect of yoga—the union of body and mind. Through the use of props for support, many of the postures are held almost effortlessly. Students should have blankets, pillows/bolsters, blocks and any other props to help them in their practice.
