Improv Jr offers an exhilarating journey into the world of improvisational theater, designed to cultivate creativity, spontaneity, and foundational skills in live acting. This weekly course provides structured sessions where participants explore the art of improvisation in a supportive and dynamic environment. This class offers a transformative experience that goes beyond acting skills, fostering confidence, creativity, and collaborative spirit. Participants gain valuable life skills that are applicable both on stage and in everyday interactions.


The program will cover the following topics:


Introduction to Improvisation: Participants will learn the basic principles of improv, including "yes, and..." collaboration, spontaneity, and the fundamentals of creating scenes on the spot.

Character Development: Through improvisational exercises and games, students will develop the ability to quickly create and portray diverse characters, enhancing their versatility and creative expression.

Storytelling Techniques: Explore narrative improvisation, where students collaboratively create and develop stories in real-time, focusing on plot development and engaging storytelling.

Scene Work: Practice improvising scenes in various genres and styles, emphasizing character relationships, conflict resolution, and scene structure.

Emotional Range and Depth: Develop the ability to express a wide range of emotions authentically and spontaneously, enhancing emotional intelligence and versatility as performers.

Stage Presence and Confidence: Build self-assurance and stage presence through guided performance opportunities, receiving constructive feedback to enhance performance skills.

Adaptability and Resilience: Enhance adaptability and resilience by navigating unexpected situations and challenges inherent in improvisational theater, fostering quick thinking and creative problem-solving skills.

Collaboration and Ensemble Building: Emphasize teamwork and ensemble skills, creating a supportive community where creativity thrives through mutual respect and cooperation.

Audience Interaction: Learn techniques for engaging with and responding to an audience during improvised performances, enhancing connection and spontaneity in live theater.

Application to Live Acting: Highlight the transferable skills of improv to scripted theater, illustrating how improvisational training enhances spontaneity, presence, and responsiveness in scripted performances.

Sam was born and raised under the bright lights of Broadway in NYC, and is a founding board member of RISE Arts Collaborative. An early love of music, singing and acting drew her to the stage! In addition to her roles on stage and behind the scenes, she has a passion for nurturing young talent. She has had the pleasure of teaching/directing theater workshops and leading improv sessions for children, to help breed confidence and set free their creative instincts through the world of performance theater.
