Bird Watching: Fall Bird Migration
Nature & Outdoors
Fall migration is an exciting time for birds. Billions of birds leave their summer breeding sites for their winter homes in search of food. August through October are peak fall migration months, with some starting as early as late June and others in December. Soaring birds that rely on thermals migrate during the day. Long-distance migratory birds migrate at night and get refueled during the day. Scott Wilson, an avid birder and guide, will offer a guided walk to observe these migrating birds as they return to their winter home. Scott will discuss the birds that winter in the local area and those that migrate through. The group will learn about birds' calls and habitats, and use binoculars to spot them. Participants should wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes for the walk. All trails are relatively flat with the exception of the Bates Land. Please bring binoculars. Core Strength and Conditioning
Exercise
This class is for those who want to build strength, especially in their core, glutes, and shoulders. After age 35, we start losing muscle mass which can lead to a host of problems, but the good news is, if you are intentional with your exercise routine, you can build new muscle at any age! In this class, we will use progressive overload (repeating movements with multiple sets) to fatigue our muscles and thus build strength. All exercises are designed to be safe and effective. All abilities are welcome, no previous experience is required. Variations and modifications will always be given to work within your limits while still challenging yourself. Building a strong body helps to prevent injury, lose fat, and create a lifestyle where movement is accessible as we age. **You are required to bring a yoga mat and water.** Here is what they are saying about Emma's Core Strength & Conditioning Class: "Emma is very motivating, always positive!" "Focuses on core, but also works to strengthen the entire body, because it's all connected. I like that the class is designed to become progressively more challenging week by week and, because the majority of the class has been taking the class for several sessions, session by session. Emma always shows modifications for people of all levels. She is a very good teacher." "The exercises (challenging!); the instructor’s enthusiasm & encouragement!" "The class was challenging and fun! I feel stronger since starting. Emma is a wonderful teacher."
