Prescott Art instructor A.B. Williams premiered her solo exhibition, “Of Human, By Human – Figurative Art in the Era of AI,” at Gallery Marquee in Fitchburg this past fall. Now available online through the artist’s website, the show explores the intersection of technology and art through both traditional paintings and AI-generated works.
In this workshop, A.B. and her partner, Gustavo, a researcher in Natural Language Processing (NLP), will discuss AI image generation and its influence on the traditional art landscape and human representation. A.B. will address questions and concerns about the manipulation of the human figure, the ethics of AI model training, and the development of several pieces featured in the exhibition. Gustavo will offer an accessible explanation of how generative models are trained and common misconceptions surrounding AI.
Together, they will compare traditional and AI-generated artworks, inviting participants to consider how generative AI is shaping human creativity, understanding, and identity.
In a range of work from life drawings and plein air painting to embroidery, wood carvings, and enameling, Abigail Williams explores the balance between conceptual understanding and creative storytelling: tracing the boundaries of accuracy and efficiency, detail and implication, function and tradition. Her most recognizable works are her nude gesture drawings in graphite and charcoal.
Since the beginning of her practice, Abigail has sought to cultivate a close familiarity with her subjects, as well as with the expressive properties of the artistic mediums available to her. Born at the turn of the century in Massachusetts, Abigail has taught herself to work in graphite, ink, clay, wood, enamel, and paint. Since 2013, the artist has studied East Asian calligraphy both domestically and abroad, with a B.A. in East Asian Languages and Arts which included brush-and-ink studies at Ewha Womans University [sic] in South Korea, and both Dalian Institute of Technology and Harbin Institute of Technology in China. Since 2016, the artist has displayed throughout New England, from private collections to public events and galleries. As of 2021, the artist has appeared yearly at Ogunquit, Maine’s annual Perkins Cove Plein Air Painting competition, winning honorable mention that same year. In 2024, she was invited to join Ogunquit’s first BonAire! event as an oil painting demonstration artist. She has also led a variety of fine arts classes over the years, from introductory drawing lessons to highly-specialized private instruction sessions. She recently premiered her first solo exhibition, “Of Human, By Human — Figurative Art in the Era of AI” at Gallery Marquee in Fitchburg, MA.
