Birth of a Community: A Lively Multimedia Account of East Groton’s Shifting Identity
History & Culture
Groton’s lakes region, a 204-acre area comprised of Lost Lake and Knop’s Pond, has long been an overlooked, under-studied part of town. Yet, it is one of the most scenic, geologically fascinating, and at one time, demographically diverse areas of Groton. In their presentation, “Birth of a Community,” two residents whose families first bought summer cottages there in the 1920s, Bob Collins and Alex Woodle, will offer an in-depth look into the last 300 years of the region’s history. A story characterized by the landscape’s shifting identity—from Colonial-era pastureland to iron-ore producing meadows, to a summer waterfront refuge turned, decades later, into the sought-after, year-round lakes community it is today. The public is cordially invited free of charge to “Birth of a Community,” a multimedia presentation and discussion on Saturday, September 13, from 2 to 4 at the Prescott Community Center. Come to learn, enjoy, and ask questions. Take away a deeper appreciation for East Groton’s unique character, historical vicissitudes, and enduring charm. Long active in revitalizing and preserving the Lost Lake region, Bob Collins is a land-use, real estate attorney, past member of the Groton Planning Board and Conservation Trust, and ongoing participant in town affairs; Alex Woodle is a geologist and water quality consultant who has studied and leant his expertise to the Lost Lakes area for years. “Birth of a Community” is hosted jointly by the Groton History Center and the Prescott Community Center.

Historical Lost Lake Boat Tour
History & Culture
Alex Woodle, a longtime resident of Lost Lake, will lead a historical tour around Lost Lake in Groton. Alex has over 100 years of in-depth knowledge of the lake region, stemming from his family's direct association with the area since the 1920s. In this 1.5-hour boat ride, he will talk about the early days of summer camps, the history of the lake, the influx of people from the nearby cities, the tight-knit lake community, and many more. This tour is designed for those new to Groton or interested in learning about Lost Lake. You’ll need to take a short walk down a woodland trail to reach Sargisson Beach dock. Please wear proper footwear. We’ll meet right on the dock at Sargisson Beach Park. Please plan to arrive about 10 minutes early to allow time for parking and the short walk down to the dock. Life vests are on board and available for all passengers who wish to use them. We appreciate Alex Woodle for volunteering his time to give the talk. All proceeds benefit the Prescott Community Center.

Indian Hindu Vedic Astrology
History & Culture
Welcome to this introductory session on Vedic Astrology, also known as Jyotish Shastra — the ancient science of light. Rooted in the Vedas, India’s oldest spiritual texts, Vedic astrology is a time-tested system that offers profound insight into the patterns of our lives, our personalities, and our karmic journeys. Unlike Western astrology, Vedic Astrology considers the precise position of planets at the time of your birth to create a Janma Kundali (birth chart), which serves as a blueprint of your life. This session will cover the following topics: 1. The fundamentals of Vedic astrology, including the 12 houses, 9 planets (Navagrahas), and 12 zodiac signs (Rashis) 2. The role of Nakshatras (lunar constellations) and how they influence temperament and destiny 3. The concept of karma and dharma through the lens of planetary placements 4. Introduction to Dashas (planetary periods) and how timing affects different phases of life 5. How astrology can be used as a tool for self-awareness, relationship compatibility, and life decisions This is not a session for predictions or superstition, but rather an opportunity to understand the language of the cosmos and how it reflects your inner and outer journey. Bring an open mind, your curiosity, and if possible, your birth details (date, time, and place) to explore how Jyotish can illuminate your path. The instructors are available for private reading after the class.
